In 1917, Ward was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed all four years of high school in the Philadelphia area.
At the age of twenty-five, on November 7, 1942, he enlisted into the United States Army as a Private First Class soldier. His enlistment required him to remain active in the United States Army for the duration of World War II or other emergency, plus additional six months.
Ward became a member of the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division under Major General Charles Gerhardt. They were a well trained combat team, deploying from Virginia, and scheduled to be the first to storm the beaches of Normandy.
As a result of the invasion, Ward was killed in action on the sixth of June in 1944.
